Temporary cooling exists for the gap — the days or weeks between a failure and a permanent fix, or between a planned shutdown and a startup. A chiller is down and the replacement is six weeks out. A rooftop unit is being changed out and the tenant below still has to work. A process needs cooling during a turnaround. A cooler is failing and the inventory in it cannot wait for a part.
The alternative to temporary cooling is usually not "wait patiently." It is closing a floor, sending people home, moving product, or losing it. Set against those costs, rental is almost always the cheap option.
The hard part is not the equipment — it is getting the application right. Spot cooling a server rack, keeping a 20,000-square-foot sales floor open in August, and holding a process loop at temperature are three different problems, and equipment that is right for one is useless for the others.
